Front Sidewalks a Dying Detail.

I kinda miss the days when one would REALLY use the front sidewalk.

A stroll to town to pick up a spool of thread.

A walk to the neighbor's house to borrow a cup of sugar.

Or to step out and wave at the newest motor carriage passing by....

While most of the front sidewalks along our street are slowly disappearing.
Chris has been trying to save ours.

Yes, there are a couple cracks. At 90, who doesn't have a few crevices?

Wow, our sidewalks get serious use every day. 25-50 people walk by my house on a daily basis. Thankfully, the city maintains them. I like to go for walks and check out the dates stamped in them :-)

Ours, too, gets a lot of use...neighbors constantly walking by, people walking to the library or rec center or bike path walking by... lots of foot traffic. It is nice.
Our sidewalk is no where near 90 years old, though... the sidewalks from that era were sandstone slabs in this area. Our neighbor has them, but we don't. We just have concrete!

Same here. LOTS of walkers, joggers, bikers. Especially this time of year.

It's kind of nice. But sometimes, it can be LOUD! :-)

My kids practically live on the sidewalk in the summers. With a small sloped front lawn and a barren wasteland for a back yard, they have little choice. ;-)

All the houses on our street are removing the sidewalks. The street sidewalk has foot traffic but not our connecting sidewalks. They are re-landscaping without them. The house across the street removed theirs, both houses next door, and several down the street. Silly considering how close to town we are.

The sidewalks being removed are not the city's just the private.

I've always heard that it was a symbol of hospitality to have a house with a front sidewalk.

We still have the walks but as the old slate gets cracked, the village has been replacing it with new concrete. It is a tragic loss. I do wonder what they do with those 5'x5'x8" slabs of broken slate though.

I'm not sure what you folks mean by connecting sidewalks? To me a sidewalk is the thing parallel to the street, with a planting area a few feet wide between the street and the sidewalk. Owned by the city. What's being torn up?

I am with Karen Anne. I'm not sure what you mean by connecting sidewalks, either. In the city (Detroit), we had the city sidewalk and then a walk that led from that to the front door. Most houses on the street where I live now don't have that.

The sidewalk on the home's property.
Front walk ?

Were your sidewalks completely covered with grass? I love our neighborhood sidewalks--lots of kids on bikes, people walking dogs, and children making chalk drawings.
