I found it n the yard while uncovering some rocks.
Yes....more rocks.......... and bricks.
It may say something else?.. I will have to hack away at the rust.
Oh and it is about 12" long.

I looked and tried to make out any other letters on this thingy.
I can make out an A K _ _ N . There is a small word beside it. It appears to be 4 letters.
Akron, Ohio? Maybe ( The _ _ are letters that I cannot make out)
I tried to get a close up pic of this. But they were not good.
Do you think it has something to do with the delivery of coal and these things on the outside of the house? (click images on link to view larger)

Damper Hook? hum.... only one of the fireplaces had a damper. But maybe? I feel like I have seen something like this before, for something?

and why the date?
"I don't know nothing about froggin' horses"...but there is some kinda thing they use to clean the dirt out.
I thought the date to be odd as well.
It is not sharp enough to be a scythe of any kind, I don't think.

it's not for frogging horses. i looked it up.
it looks like something you'd use as a handle to lift a pot out of the fire or something. and then you'd hang it (and whatever you lifted) up by the hole in the other end.
there might be other words on it? a name?
i'm not sure i can rest until the mystery is solved.

we found all sorts of crazy tools in the basement too. a lot of them have to do w/coal we found out.
i don't have that tool though. sorry! (maybe take it to an antique market--our's have lots of booths that just sell antique tools and they probably could tell you).

The date may be a patent date so you know those Amish women were frustrated in 1928 too!

But a patent date is a good clue.
It reminds of something my Dad used to use to stoke the coal furnace.
I want it to be a farming tool, like for digging rows. However, I think the fact that the arm isn't straight, but curves away before making the hook, suggests that it must be used for picking up or grabbing something that needs that space. Otherwise, why not just make a straight piece of metal with the hook at the end?
Up close it almost looks like a crowbar of some sort. I tried searching Google Patent Search for that date with no luck. Haven't checked the Patent Office website yet, though. Hmm...
